Whiffle LES model

Previous2023

Last updated 1 month ago

Below are the release notes for the Whiffle LES model. Curious about how the Whiffle LES model works? .

v15

  • Wind speed standard deviation, turbulence intensity and turbulence kinetic energy diagnostics now include their respective subgrid contributions.

  • Implementation of new planetary boundary layer (PBL) scheme for meso-scale simulations, improving the parameterization of boundary layer turbulence. This primarily improves the representation of the boundary layer during daytime in the meso-scale model, and by extension in the LES.

  • The surface characteristics (roughness length, etc.) within a meso-scale or LES grid box are now weighed by their respective fractional coverage within the grid box instead of taking the most common value.

v14

  • Resolved issue with retrieving terrain data in Alaska.

  • Fixed sign convention in veer variable of turbine output.

  • Fixed issue with initialisation of soil moisture/temperature that led to issues with the development of the day-time boundary layers, in some cases with strong spatial soil moisture gradients with values around the wilting point.

v13

  • Upgrade default subgrid configuration based on extensive verification and validation to reduce numerical artifacts and improve TI representation.

  • Full implementation of AspTurbines library on GPU, leading to significant speed-up of runs with many turbines.

  • Reduced wind turbine actuator disk filter width for more realistic wind turbine and wind farm representation.
